Velvet Brick [pickup]
自称SONEX研究家のオヤジですから、時間があるときはもっぱら海外のサイトで情報を集めています。
国内では私のホームページ以外に信頼できるまとまった情報はありませんから（プチ自慢）
でも、SONEX自体がマイナーでおもちゃの扱いなのでいざ調べてみると分からないことだらけなのです。
そのなかで、前から気になっていたのが、SONEXのオープンゼブラピックアップは
１．TIM SHAWが開発したPAFのリイシューピックアップのひとつ
２．ベルベットブリックである
という記載を多く見かけることです。

今回までSHAWというのが人の名前だということも知りませんでしたし、Velvet Brick は外人さんお得意のニックネームじゃないかと、あまり突っ込んで考えていませんでした。研究家というにはあまりにお粗末な話です。
SONEXシリーズにはアーチストモデルを除くと、２つのタイプのピックアップしか搭載されていません。
ひとつはDELUXE（1980-1984年）だけに搭載されるSONEX-180 Deluxe ピックアップ（上の写真）。これはそういうスタンプが押してあるので、私はあえてSONEXピックアップ名称で統一していました。
それから、もうひとつはSTANDARD（1980年）とCUSTOM（1980-1981年）に搭載されたDIRTY FINGERSです。
で、Velvet Brick とはいったい何？と検索したら、まあ、あるんですよ。いろいろ情報が。海外ではこの手のフォーラムがいくつもあって、みんなで熱く討論しています。日本の２ちゃんねるや質問箱とは違って、情報の出所をあげているし、直接関係者に当たったり、ギブソン社に問い合わせたりする人もいるので、まあ、少しは信憑性は高いのですが。実際のところ、現在、こんな古くてマイナーなギターのピックアップについてギブソン社に問い合わせてもほとんど情報は得られないようです。結局、これだという決定版はありません。
このあたりは帰国してから私なりに整理してみます（本当か？）。
それで今回なんとなくわかったのは次の２点。
１．DELUXEのSONEX-180ピックアップは間違いなく Velvet Brick である。
２．西独のシャーラー製である。
２．については、異論があります。私は今でもこのピックアップは日本か韓国で作られたものであると思っています。

Velvet Brick Pickups
These came stock in the Sonex 180 and the Gibson "The SG" made between the years of 1979 - 1983. Often overlooked and forgotten it is now hard to find info on these pickups because everyone confuses them with the Dirty Fingers. They are similar Zebra black and Cream open coil humbuckers with screw pole pieces on the black side and flat pole pieces on the Cram - but the clearest difference is that they have 3 adjustable mounting screws - two on one side and one on the other. They are also made in Germany - not the USA. I read an article once with Willem Lorenz aka Bill Lawrence that said while he was working for Gibson he had these custom sound to his specs by Schaller in West Germany. They are very Hot pickups but still very toneful. I don't know the exact output but must be at least 13K. Sort of the polar opposite of a PAF - if you like the Dirty Fingers you will love these. they are excellent pickups （MY LESPAUL FORUMより）
Gibson Velvet Brick Humbucking Pickup
This pickup was produced by Tim Shaw for Gibson for a short time between '81 & '84. It meters out at 8.13K. There is much confusion about velvet bricks and there are several versions but they are legendary among Gibson enthusiasts due to insane rarity. First released as the "TGA Super Humbucking pickup" in 1979, then renamed after a hot replacement pickup (the Red Rhodes 'Velvet Hammer'). The Velvet Brick is wound like a PAF, but with a ceramic instead of alnico magnet, producing uniquely dynamic pick response with nice bite, unique gain structure, full bandwidth and superb presence without a hint of shrillness or muddiness. Its great for very high gain feedback harmonics w/o squealing or other undesirable noises. They were used in a few Gibson guitars in the early 80's, for the Sonex Deluxe, as a bridge pickup in the Firebrand series of SG's and in both spots for the Invader. （eBay 商品説明より）
